Ply-split letters are worked in the structure TLOI (Two-Layered Oblique Interlacing) with 4-ply cords plied DDLL. TLOI designs are the same on both sides with the colors reversed. When no twist is left between splittings (no pattern), the braid has two separate layers, one Dark and the other Light. A half-twist between splittings exchanges the colors and joins the layers.
This photo above shows a detail from a ply-split braid that I made in 2016, alternating Dark and Light letters in TLOI with 16 cords.
Alphabet Graphs for TLOI with 16 Cords, DARK LETTERS
by Linda Hendrickson
PDF format $ 6.00 plus 5% transaction fee
I designed this alphabet to be worked with 16 cords. This 7-page PDF includes graphs that show both the front and back side of all of the letters, and a blank page for graphing your own designs in TLOI. The front side (long rows) is Dark letters on a Light background, and the values are reversed on the back side (short rows).
If you need instructions for TLOI, you can find two projects in my book, How to Make Ply-Split Braids & Bands. One is a braid on a key ring called TLOI Sampler, and has sections with two separate layers, and a simple geometric design. The other is TLOI KEYS, where the braid on the key ring has the word KEYS. These are also available individually in PDF format.
