Ply-Split Asymmetric Zig-Zag Necklace by Linda Hendrickson

My source for the ply-split zig-zag is shown in Plate 38 of Peter Collingwood's book The Techniques of Ply-Split Braiding. The caption reads "wool braid with dark/light/dark/light plied cords, giving sections with transverse and oblique stripes".

I had previously made a necklace entirely of zig-zags, but always felt that it looked a bit like a clown collar when I wore it! Then I had the idea to make this asymmetric version, and like it so much better.

I did a little machine stitching to emphasize the design where the two sides join.

To finish the necklace, I unplied all of the 2-color, 4-ply cords, separated the black and white plies, and re-plied them as 2-ply cords.

I described how to make this braid in my book Great SCOT!. You can order a kit with detailed step-by-step instructions and photos to learn how to make the zig-zag braid.
