Learn the basics of the double-faced structure while creating beautiful traditional motifs from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Bands woven by the Mamasa Toraja were traditionally sewn together to make betel bags. Bands with these motifs are still being woven in Indonesia today.
The pattern area for your band will have 20 tablets, and you will also add a warp-twined border as shown here.
Class discussion will cover tips for avoiding and correcting mistakes, and for graphing your own designs. Students must know how to make a continuous warp and have some experience with warp twining.
More information about the tablet weaving from Sulawesi can be found in The Techniques of Tablet Weaving by Peter Collingwood and Special Tablet Weaves by Marijke van Epen.
